Ask the Travel Shrink: Amalfi Coast? Help!
Should I skip Positano? Is Ischia worth it? What's a great hotel in Rome? The Fathom Travel Shrink is in. (A bonus post for paid subscribers.)
Dear Fathom Travel Shrink: I’m planning a trip to Italy in September, and I'm torn between a few options. I'm contemplating a few days in Rome, Positano, and Ischia. However, I've started to hear amazing things about the Borgo Santandrea in Amalfi. Would you recommend skipping Ischia (currently focusing on Mezzetorre) in favor of Borgo Santandrea? Or ditching Le Sirenuse/Positano in favor of Borgo Santandrea? And which Rome hotel do you recommend for a non-stuffy, boutique-y feeling in a central location with great concierge service?
Pavia here. First things first: You’re smart to start planning early, because I was on the Amalfi Coast at the end of September and October last year, and it was heaving with visitors. Not as bad as a typical August, but not as quiet as September was before Covid. Don’t get me wrong: September is the best time of year to visit. The weather and the sea are warm, the days are long, and the tomatoes are at peak deliciousness.
And, yes, you should skip Positano.
